Fighting Cancer
I found The 14 Day Stress Cure a unique guide to meeting life's unanticipated upsets and managing the resulting stress. It has been a great assist in my three years fight with cancer.

Curing Stress
This book has a good variation of explanations on ways to cure stress.

So good it started a study group
The 14 day stress cure made such a difference in the lives of 3 wmen that they meet for dinner occasionally and talk about how to tell other people about the book and what it can do to enhance your life and the quality of lives of people around you. Between the 3, we have handled problems of anger, guilt and shyness, decreasing the level of what we used to call stress to virtually nil.

Bed-Knob and Broomstick: A Combined Edition of the Magic Bed-Knob and Bonfires and Broomsticks (Odyssey Classic)
Published in Paperback by Harcourt Young Classics (March, 1990)
Authors: Mary Norton, Erik Blegvad, and Mary Bonfires and Broomsticks Morton
Average review score:

Definitely not the movie
So, having seen the Disney movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks, you know the whole story, right? Wrong! Being a fan of that movie, I picked up this book expecting some minor discrepancies, but was amazed to find a story that had practically nothing in common with the movie.

This is the story of Carey, Charles and Paul Wilson who, while staying with their aunt in Bedfordshire, suddenly discover that a neighbor, Miss Price is a witch! Not your stereotypical witch, Miss Price is a prim and proper lady who is willing to buy the children's silence with the gift of a magic bed knob that will allow the children to travel through space and time. Seeking to visit their mother, the children find themselves scooped up by the London police. Next, Miss Price takes them to an isolated tropical island, only to discover that cannibals inhabit the island. Their final adventure takes them to Restoration England, where they meet a forlorn (and inept) necromancer, Emelius Jones.

This story (actually two books combined into one) is quite charming. In a gentle and freewheeling fashion, Mary Norton draws the reader along on a fantastic adventure. This book is just right for the young reader, with a few nice illustrations, and a wonderful storyline.

Bedknob and Broomstick
Our class enjoyed hearing our teacher read this story. She thought we might like it because we enjoyed "Harry Potter" last year. We liked it when the children travelled back into the past. It was good when Miss Price and Emelius fell in love and travelled back to Emelius's time

Classic Tale of Magic and Adventure
I first read this book as a child, and it was one that I read again and again. Using a magical bedknob, the children in this story travel through time and space to ancient England, a desert island and more. I just bought this for my nine year old niece, who is a "Harry Potter" fan, but too young for most of the scarier titles that are sometimes suggested for fans of the series. Like all of the author's books, this one is exciting, but not scary, and is clearly the product of a gentler time.

Cried with author
I have already finished your book and I found it to be very well written, very detailed (which I love), and as I read, my heart ached for the little girl and the life events that made for such a childhood, I even cried with you. We never know why one is chosen over another to have a certain life, and bare those kinds of burdens. But I rejoiced with you when you made that commitment to the Lord and you came forward at church, at such a young age, and how He always kept coming to your mind in times of trouble. I was touched how the Holy Spirit would come to you, protect you, and talk to your heart. And I rejoiced and praised the Lord when I read that you had been healed and He now walks with you every minute. Oh, I sing praises to His name for bringing you to a place of forgiveness and peace. I'm choaked up even now, just knowing you are in His care. I also feel like I know you in some way. Thank you for letting me into your life. Thank you for your honesty and sincerity. I feel like I know too much and yet I can't wait to meet you and hug you! Please know how blessed we will be to have you on the show and how we look forward to meeting you personally. <>< Leslie MN Reality Radio

Awesome, truly awesome!
I am amazed at the extent of God's sovereignty and the depths of His love for us. The author endured a great deal of abuse, in terms of number of events, variety of events, and intensity of events. But through it all, He was there -- allowing her to endure up to her limit, but no more. As one who was also victimized with emotional abuse, the author's story and love for God has been a true encouragement and comfort for me. And she has made one thing very clear to me: that God does indeed work all things for good for those who love Him. In spite of whatever ugliness and evil may come our way, God is always there for us, and He will never leave us or forsake us. And yet, He can turn our moments of despair into opportunities to reach out, encourage, and help others in their moments of despair by uniquely positioning us with a profound depth of understanding for the situations of others. Our God truly is a remarkable God, and T.C.Morton truly is a wonderful blessing and saint.

Wonderful
I kow the author personally and am in the book also. She has managed to come through this ordeal and have a "normal" life. This is a great book and I highly recommend it!

Meyerson Symphony Center: Building a Dream
Published in Hardcover by University of North Texas Press (March, 2000)
Authors: Laurie C. Shulman and Morton Meyerson
Average review score:

A sure hit!
A sumptuous read - Laurie Shulman's inimitable wit and style grace the pages of this handsome book. The details she shares are as fresh and lively as her trademark program notes. Like many others who worked in the Arts District, I watched the Meyerson being built - from crater to finished perfection. The knowledge Shulman imparts expands my appreciation and most certainly will enhance my enjoyment of another concert in this dream hall, the Meyerson.

Got copies for my musical relatives
This is a great book about a wonderful place for music. After reading the book, I purchased copies for my relatives who are professional musicians, and those who care about such music. One might ask how can you make a story about building a music hall interesting, but Laurie Shulman has done so.

Real page turner
Excellent and interesting book on a fantastic community effort.

Mister Jelly Roll: The Fortunes of Jelly Roll Morton, New Orleans Creole and "Inventor of Jazz"
Published in Paperback by Pantheon Books (May, 1993)
Authors: Alan Lomax and David Stone Martin
Average review score:

Lives Up To The Hype; Essential
This is a straight reprint of the original...they actually photographed the pages instead of having it re-typeset, thank god...and all the David Stone Martin illustrations are intact.

This is THE classic on jazz music and writing. Crazy stories, crazy times, with the unbelievable spinner of tales Jelly Roll holding the floor. Lomax could have just printed Jelly's comments verbatim and this would've been great, but he went to the trouble of tracking down a bunch of people who knew Jelly or were otherwise around New Orleans in the early daze, and this added detail spices the pot considerably. Alan Lomax's own commentary and observations are witty, charming, and spot on.

This edition is made definitive by a scholarly afterword bringing the reader fully up-to-date on modern Jelly Roll research. Quite a few pertinent details are now known that weren't when Lomax was writing this.

Up there with Mezz Mezzrow's "Really the Blues" as essential an text in the American music pantheon.

An incredible book!
This is one of the rare books for it can be enjoyed by just about anyone who picks it up. Its the amazing account of the life of Jelly Roll Morton, one of the best jazz pianists of all time. Though a braggart and troubled man, he created some of the very best pieces of jazz. The book goes into his life from his childhood and his time working at Storyville to the very troubled end in the early forties. You learn about his family, his troubled relationships with Anita and Mabel and how he went from being wildly successful to dying virtually forgotten. Voodoo, New Orleans, jazz and Creole culture, its all here.

Written with flair and never boring, Mr. Jelly Roll is a book that you will read more than once. Its a look at a legend and a glimpse into a world we can only know of through books and music. Get this if you want a good read and a look at Mr. Morton's life. A true classic.

You can almost smell the smoke in the back rooms
Alan Lomax interviewed Jelly Roll while doing an extensive set of recordings shortly before Morton's death. He followed up with a number of interviews with people who knew Jelly Roll. Lomax did a fabulous job of keeping himself out of the way while letting the often colorful information from the interviews tell the story of Jelly's part in the birth of jazz, a story with triumphs, massive ego and ultimate decline. I read a library copy and am buying a copy for a present.

Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability: Getting & Keeping Your Benefits

Get and keep your ssdi
Bought this book as part of prep for application for ssdi. (also bought how to get ssi and ssdi by mike davis and dis workbook for ss applicants by doug. smith). Each book explained a diff part of the ssdi process. This book told what each med diagnosis needed to establish to qualify for perm. disability. And it goes on to explain how to keep your ssdi once you get your award. I did win my case the first try using the info in the 3 books. Having them made all the diff in the world in understanding the ssdi process. Best $[money]. (all 3 books) I ever spent...

One of three best Social Security disability books
As a lawyer I recommend three books to individuals who ask for help in getting their Social Security disability benefits. First is our Disability Workbook for Social Security Applicants. Everyone tells me that this book greatly simplifies getting disability benefits. I can testify that interviewing a client is much easier when he or she has used the Disability Workbook. Second, the book How to Get SSI and Social Security Disability, by Mike Davis, is insightful and easy to read. Mr. Davis is a former disability examiner. His clear explanations of common bureaucratic problems make his book one of my favorites. Finally, I use Dr. David Morton's Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability. Dr. Morton is a former disability determination services staff physician who describes Social Security medical decision making better than anyone else I know. Every doctor who communicates with Social Security about patients should have Dr, Morton's book on the shelf - and every disability lawyer. I give all three books the highest rating.

Essentials for Obtaining/Keeping SSI/SSDI Benefits
This book contains valuable information for the professional and layman seeking to obtain and keep SSI/SSDI benefits. It is an easily read road map, taking the reader through a maze of bureaucratic terminology and procedures. Glossaries explaining terms and "government speak" are strategically placed throughout. Samples of all major forms used by the system are presented with guidance on how to complete them. Most importantly, Dr. Morton cautions the reader about impending laws being contemplated by SSA which would severely complicate matters, and possibly invite fraud, by having non-medical personnel review claims for benefits--which by definition, are medical/psychological documents. This warning and the data presented make for a valuable reading event.

Pain, Pain Go Away
Published in Paperback by Ishi Press (April, 1990)
Authors: William Faber and Morton Walker
Average review score:

Excellent book, and Reconstructive Therapy really helped me
Read this book if you have pain and especially if you are considering knee or hip replacement, or surgery for pain.

A neighbor loaned me Pain, Pain, Go Away a few years ago after I tore a tendon in my right shoulder. I read the book and made an appointment for Reconstructive Therapy and Neural Therapy with an osteopath near me. By the time I made it to his office, I was in agony and headed for surgery. The situation had degenerated to the point I couldn't lie down or use my arm at all. I hadn't slept more than 30-45 minutes a night in several months, due to the severe pain.

The treatments totally fixed me, without surgery. I had relief from the first treatment, but it took several visits before I was able to use my arm again and sleep through the night. I had 13 treatments in all.

Definitely read this book if you have any pain whatever, and try this method before you consider surgery.

The book itself is good and will give you the information you need to make a decision about RT. I highly recommend it.

Feel free to email me.

Information that can save your way of life or career
This book provides the information needed to seek out an uncommon treatment that can save your way of life or career after an injury. It provides a good explaination of proliferant treatment and many different examples of its use.

Very good info on treatment
This is a great book on prolotherapy, also called reconstructive therapy. I've done a massive amount of research on this treatment, including this book. The book really tells it like it is. There really is some excellent information in there. I must say that presently, based on my research, the "true guru" of this therapy practices in the city of Ensenada, Baja California. Dr. Milne Ongley is a British doctor who's perfected his technique over 40 years. Certainly others use the technique with tremendous success. Dr. Ongley, however, has expanded the use of the treatment to diseases that most would argue are untreatable....such as Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), and other maladies.

Private Eye
Published in Paperback by Ekstasis Editions (10 April, 2001)
Authors: Wendy Worton and Wendy Morton
Average review score:

Wonderful Poems
Like an exquisite set of old dishes, used day in and day out, these beautiful poems slip up on you unannounced, slide into your consciousness quietly, so that you end up wondering whose idea it really was -- the poet's or the reader's. Artful language and ordinary days get mixed here into something full of stars, glinting with startling images, capering across a suddenly meaningful landscape, sliding so easily into the mind as not to be felt until the shock of recognition sets in. As the poet says at some point, you can eat these poems, drink them, and let them suffuse you own life with the warm satisfaction of a visit to someone else's brilliant kitchen.

Poetic Feast
I loved this book because I love the way she uses imagery. It appeals to all my senses. I especially liked to poem about finding the ancient remains of a small girl in the Andes, and, on a lighter note, the one about the dog that swam like Esther Williams. I would love to read more poetry by this writer.

I love this private eye poet
Wendy Morton's words are beautiful, funny, quirky and sometimes sad. I love these poems -- "Streaming Flamingoes" is a good place to start reading... a gleaming ode to poetry itself. Morton writes about the sensual act of reading words and links this to food in a most provocative way. "Eat this poem." she writes. Delicious, delicious, I murmur.

Lean and Mean: The No Hassle, Life Extending Weight Loss Program for Men
Published in Paperback by Boulevard (Mass Market) (June, 1994)
Author: Morton H. Shaevitz
Average review score:

Learn to control the physical area of you life!
This is a must read for anyone who is struggling with controlling their eating habits. I buy this book for all of my friends who are starting to spend more time at the office pursuing their professional careers. It's getting harder and harder to find - reorder.

It works! A no nonsense approach to weight loss for men.
The ultimate criteria for a weight loss book is: Did you loose the weight and keep it off? The answer to both of these questions is a resounding, yes. This book is not just about eating right and losing weight--it's a lifestyle change. Dr. Shaevitz uses real-world examples that men can empathize with and take comfort that they're not the only ones struggling with weight gain & loss. Using Dr. Shaevitz's guidelines I lost 20 pounds and a friend of mine did the same. In fact, I'm about ready to loan the book to my boss--the ultimate recommendation. In closing, I wholeheartedly endorse this book.

<P>This two-phase program can help you lose weight for good!

Here's a writer who understands what motivates men to lose weight and keep it off. The author is realistic. He understands the crazy life-style real men lead, their hectic travel schedules, the restaurant meal stresses and the lack of physical activity strains. I can attest to the fact that this program works -- it did for me.

Dr. Shaevitz offers four simple rules to follow to lose weight during the first phase of his program. Then, modifing them a bit, these rules help you keep that weight off during the second phase -- the rest of your life. These rules involve neither calorie nor gram counting, and that constant gnawing hunger that accompanies most weight loss programs is not part of this one. There are no rigid daily diets to follow, no special food products to buy, and no short-term sacrifices to the great hunger god in sky. The program is rooted in common sense and caution, giving the reader the basic information about nutrition that's needed to make the right food choices in virtually every situation.

After detailing why following each rule is so important to the whole program, a signigicant portion of the book addresses the specific eating problems men face while traveling. Guides for what to order in each kind of restaurant (Mexican, Italian, French, fast food, etc.) are followed by a very helpful "Do's and Don'ts" summary.

The chapter directed to the women who love us (wives, girl-friends, etc.) yet who often feed us exactly the wrong things, and worse yet, express their love for us in exactly the wrong ways, is absolutely priceless. If there is some well-meaning woman in your life concerned about how much you weigh, and sometimes known to nag you a bit about it, buy this book, if for no other reason than just to give her that chapter to read.

Even if you already know all about dieting, you will find this book both readable and helpful. That's because it is not so much about dieting as it is about the helping men become the kind of good food consumers that leave them feeling better, looking better, and enjoying life more.

Following "the rules" suggested about 80% of the time, I've lost weight consistently over time and have been able to keep that weight off without going hungry and without giving-up everything that tastes good, the food that I like to eat. But the real kicker (which has motivated my writing this review): I've never felt better!

Here's the culinary and life-style advice I've needed for many years now, and I am happy to recommend it to you wholeheartedly.
